Choose a simple, direct result you need from the other person. “I need you to believe me,” “I need you to stay,” and “I need you to forgive me” are playable because they give you somebody to affect and an outcome you can pursue.
The objective should fit the text, matter now, and activate behaviour. You either get it or you do not, then you deal with the consequences. You may enter with it, or discover it when new information arrives. Do not play the objective before the character has a reason to need it.
Avoid emotions and private states such as “I want to be sad” or “I want to understand myself.” Ask what you need the other person to do, believe, reveal, stop, or give. Then let their resistance force your next tactic.
