Stakes are what success or failure costs the character. You do not play stakes by adding volume or trying to look more emotional. You understand the consequence, pursue the objective, and let the answer affect you.
Ask what you lose if this person refuses. What becomes possible if they agree? Who else is affected? What belief about yourself is confirmed or destroyed? Why is the cost different today?
If the objective is “I need my father to stay,” the stakes may include another abandonment, the loss of a final chance, or confirmation that the character was never worth choosing. The actor does not need to demonstrate all of that before the father answers. The need organizes the pursuit. The other person’s response creates the consequence.
