How do I prepare a self-tape audition?
Start with the scene, not the camera. Read the sides for what is happening, decide what you need from the other person, make the frame and sound dependable, then choose something specific you can repeat and adjust.
Four useful passes before you press send.

Understand the sides
Name the relationship, the circumstances, the pressure, and what changes in the scene. You are not looking for a mood. You are looking for something to do.

Choose a playable action
Decide what you need from the other person and pursue it. A specific action gives the scene somewhere to go.

Make the setup boring
Use a dependable frame, clear sound, usable light, and a reader who can support the work. Technical drama is rarely the kind we want.

Use the tape as information
Watch one take for clarity. Are you listening? Can the relationship be seen? Can you adjust without starting the scene over? Make the next take from what you learned.
A quick check before recording.
- I know what I want from the other person.
- My choice is something I can play, not a feeling I am trying to manufacture.
- The frame, eyeline, sound, and reader are dependable enough to let the acting be seen.
- I have left enough time to make an adjustment instead of sending the first usable take by default.
What training can help with.
A self-tape is still a piece of acting work. The camera does not remove the need to understand the scene, make a choice, listen, and respond. It makes vague preparation easier to see.
Training is useful when it lets you repeat that process under some pressure. It cannot guarantee a callback or a booking. It can give you more than one way to prepare when the material changes.
